EDUCATION

The mission of the Education Committee for the Historical Society is to engage, share, and demonstrate the history and heritage of Yamhill County. To that end, we invite schools and homeschool students to visit our museum in McMinnville and experience history. We have a full-sized replica of a covered wagon for students to get in while wearing pioneer clothes. They can play with toys and play games that children 130 years ago played.

During the fall and spring, we conduct a program that allows children to experience many of the activities that children of 130 years ago experienced. The hands-on activities consist of such things as: planting wheat, making candles, working with wood with old-fashioned equipment, pretending they are mules in harness, sewing clothes, washing clothes, creating music with spoons, and attending an 1880 one-room school. They also watch a blacksmith ply his trade.

This is an all volunteer run program, therefore, activities depend on the volunteers available on any given day.

To help us sustain this program, there is a $1.00 charge per student attending.
